Owl Theme Part 2: Cupcakes

Image
After reading Owl Themed Cake  part 1  I am sure you're all keen to read on about the cupcake toppers. (Made from fondant treated with CMC 1tsp per 500gram) For me these were my favourite part of the cake theme, so many cute owls surrounding the cake, and  they were fun to make. They also ended up being a top favourite "how to" activity at my community hobby workshops last year. As seen on Cupcake Trends I was inspired by these owls at Cake Decorating Trends , but I wanted something that I could get away  without having to buy a special cutter. (You all should know by now that I love saving money!) So in the end I tweaked the idea a little more and chose a round cutter. I think the design still came out just as cute. I also decided that love hearts would make for a better beak, and in the midst of it all, found it easy to use hearts for the feet tucked underneath the body. A couple of tips: #1 Dry the wings, feet, and the body shape separately over night

Owl Themed Cake Part 1. With Edible Bunting

Image
Last year I made this cute owl themed cake with mini edible bunting flags. Writing up a tutorial has been on my to do list but I simply have not had the time to write it all up. In saying that I thought the very least I could do was to upload all of the photos that I took, because as they say "a picture tells a 1000 words". All the decorations pictured are 100% edible (except the 2 straws,  candle,  and the string used to thread the flags) and were homemade with love. If there is anything specific you would like to know then please ask me and I'll do my best to answer as quickly as possible. If you're on Google+ or Facebook you're pretty much guaranteed a reply within 24 hours. Here are the photos of making the main cake, and over the weekend I will make a separate part 2 post on the owl cupcake toppers.  Cutting strips & flag shape with pizza wheel. Use a toothpick to make holes for threading. Let letters dry a few minutes before handling to

Beginners Cake Decorating Questions Answered.

Image
I have just updated my pages tab "Teach Yourself Links" .  It includes my top top 3 answers to my most frequently asked questions. "How do I decorate a cake"  "I don't know where to start"  or "How do I cover a cake?" Why have I been answering in links?  Well these companies are professionals in their fields, and I am not here  to re-write their work - and most obviously I am not a professional. I want to give you the best information and not just my translation. I covered 3 different learning styles when choosing the top 3. A webpage, book and video; when you put the 3 together you will give yourself one of the best head starts to teaching yourself amateur cake decorating at home.  Of course, they are not the only links available, and yes there are quite literally thousands of wonderful web based tutorials both free and for a small fee, web subscriptions, books, and tons of Youtube tutorials; but these are the three that I personally

8 Minute Moist Microwave Cake Recipe : Lemonade Cake

Image
I have been meaning to share this recipe for the popular 8 Minute Chocolate Cake that I have seen demonstrated at Tupperware parties. What? 8 minutes?  Yep you guessed it!  It's quick and easy and very adaptable.  For the wow factor,  demonstrators often use Lemonade or for chocolate cake mixes Cola goes well. I personally prefer plain soda water. I don't really know what the origins of the recipe are, I don't even know if Tupperware invented it - but what I do know is that is fantastic in an emergency when unexpected guests arrive or when you don't want to heat the conventional oven up. The cake itself is moist,  almost a pudding if you eat it warm or a soft moist  crumb when cold.  It is even yummier with an easy ganache poured over as pictured, why not try my Raspberry Liqueur Ganache recipe., add some berries and YUM! Ingredients : 1 Packet of any brand Chocolate Cake mix (discard instructions) 1 Packet of Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix 1/3 cup

Moulin Rouge started it all!

This was really the first cake I had ever made that showed signs of getting into decorating seriously. May 2013. It was my first time to ganache and fondant cover a mud cake using Planet Cakes beginners book for the Recipe. Lots of flaws and lots learned as I put my idea in my head into place but overall I was happy with my effort.  Here's a few action shots : Making the Figurine was a challenge and I have Lots to learn on how to cover with a smoother finish.  I had so much fun designing and making this cake, including the homemade cupcake picks and tiered stand. This was my moment that I thought hey - if I can pull this off now and make my friend so happy with her cake, then imagine what I can do equipped with some real skills. So that's my goal for 2014 - I want to learn some real skills and techniques.  My favourite part about this cake: The Birthday Girl Matched it! This year I am going to practice my existing skills but also seek out new o

How much are your cakes? Can I please order?

Image
On a weekly basis I get requests for cake orders, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, christening cakes... but at this stage of my cake decorating journey I do not sell my cakes. I don't have a registered kitchen and this is my hobby, and as soon as you start putting financial pressure on my decorating I would no longer enjoy it. So I thought it would be a great idea to list some of the fabulous local business' who network with me on a regular basis. These lovely local cake makers have a strong social networking presence and can all be found on facebook. The list is by no means a recommendation, just a simple directory to help you make contact with each business individually, to find the one that suits your personal needs.  So if you really cannot make your own cake and need assistance from a professional then try out my Local directory for Cairns, Queensland. To access the Local Cake Decorators Directory click "Local Directory" Tab above or... And
