Drip Cake Tips! My Way!

Image
Hey Lovelies I hope your week has been awesome?! If not, I hope it get's better! Today I just wanted to share with you a few of my chocolate drip cakes and a couple of tips that work for me. Drip cakes are so easy and take some of the stress out of wanting a "perfectly" smooth top. (Yes I have issues!) It really doesn't matter that your top is a little rough because you're going to cover it with yummy chocolate ganache and then decorate it with anything you like! Now, it is most common for drip cakes to be buttercream with the chocolate drip on top but you know me, I am a ganache girl! So all mine are covered in chocolate ganache. I prefer the taste, texture and the durability of a ganache base, and for me, living in a tropical climate I find buttercream melts way too fast!  However which ever one you use to cover your cake these tips will work for both buttercream and ganache. Scroll down for the list. 30th Birthday Chocolate Drip Cake 40t...

Heart of Te Fiti Cake: You know Who You Are...

Image
"I have crossed the horizon to find you I know your name They have stolen the heart from inside you But this does not define you This is not who you are You know who you are" Lyrics from "Moana" Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Mancina Ahhh Moana! Such a feel good family story and definitely our family's current favourite Disney Movie! And I will say, my niece is just the cutest when she is belting out songs in the backyard: "My name is Moana!" So it was no surprise that my niece wanted a Moana themed cake! We brainstormed a few ideas which included a quick Google - and anyone who has asked Google for a Moana Cake would have most likely seen the amazing Cynthia White 's Moana inspired Cakes including the most beautiful Heart of Te Fiti  (and not to mention several replicas by other cakers!) To say she is amazing just doesn't seem to give her enough justice. (Oops I feel a cake crush coming on!) Now if anyone knows my cake style by...

Aloha! Luau Tropical Engagement Cake!

Image
Aloha My Cakey Friends! I cannot believe it's been almost TWO YEARS since I last posted on my blog! Yes that's right 2 whole years! Have you missed me?  I have most certainly missed you! If you're new to my little cake corner of the world - welcome! I have come back online because I wanted to share with you what I feel is my best cake ever!  My niece's Luau Tropical themed Engagement Cake. What started out as a simple idea to cross off making sugar / fondant frangipanis from my "cake bucket list" turned into a fully decked out Luau themed cake with all the tropical trimmings! Miniature fondant coconuts, flower lei necklaces, pineapples, Tiki mask, hibiscus and even a ukulele!  Aloha! Luau Themed Engagement Cake. All the tropical fondant trimmings! Now I will not tell a lie - this cake took an incredible amount of time. As I said, it's the best cake I have ever made! And you know that "The Best!"  isn't something I can pull o...

Kardashian Kollection Inspired Cake

Image
Happy Birthday Gabriella the biggest Kardashian Kollection fan I know! Naked Black Chocolate Ganache, with Edible Leopard print courtesy of The Cupcake Orchard. Kardashian Kollection inspired logo and accents handmade with fondant and lustre dust by me. In a last minute rush it was decided that my niece would be in town to celebrate her 21st birthday and I wanted to make something special. I was inspired by Gabriella's favourite Kardashian Kollection leopard print purse. I am not that confident with my chocolate painting skills so i thought it would be a great excuse to try an edible image from my local cake supplies shop. Alexi was a fantastic help and had printed out a custom image for me in no time. I was really impressed with the quality, and found it much easier to work with than wafer paper and it sure did save me a lot of time! No hand painting all those leopard spots! It was so easy to peel and trim to size. I brushed a little piping gel...

The Great Gatsby Cake

Image
Hi Everyone I hope your holidays have been treating you well? Thought I would just quickly share my Great Gatsby themed cake with you all! I have had such a super crazy week and I madly put this cake together at the last minute. My original design was going to be a fair bit different but due to circumstances out of my control I had to quickly redesign it. I was upset my originally planned flowers and feathers didn't make it - OMGOSH!!  Never and I mean NEVER rush large flowers - they will just not dry in time!  Ooops! And they don't like to be moved before hand! Have a look at what didn't make it - I think my edible  wafer paper feathers came out awesome! I am super keen to make another cake using edible feathers and flowers in the future - but definitely at a less hectic time of year! What was not meant to be! I feel a bit disappointed that it didn't all work out as originally planned but my friend said she was happy so hopefully she ...

Lego Chima Laval Inspired Cake

Okay everyone,  so continuing on from  last weeks Skylander Portal Cake  this was my son’s second cake for his seemingly month long birthday celebrations!  Now if you follow me on Facebook you would know that I had a Migraine knock me out for 36 hours this week – so I'm happy with what I still  managed to churn out on the rest of the cake ! Lots of crazy errors made (I mean loads of what was I thinking moments??) But I am just going to focus what I am happy with. Something I always preach to others, and need to learn to do more of myself. So here it goes.... 1) I loved my first 2D character standing head (the topper) most pleased with myself!  2) My 3 coloured ganached tiers survived the afternoon humidity quite well even though setting was rushed. Oh and if you are not familiar with my signature, that's right that blue cake is C o l o r e d  Ganache not fondant! Skip to Coloured Ganache Recipe here. 3) I really like ...

Spyro Skylander Portal Cake

So it's been pretty crazy in my house this past month! So much going on and so little time to fit everything in. It's like I am bobbing up and down out of water trying to breathe... But thank goodness, I think I may have just gotten through and I am clambering to shore! If you have been keeping up across the platforms you know I have been celebrating my son's birthday through cake and sugar for what seems like a month! 3 Different days of celebrations for one child! Now I have to be clear here " I do not normally do this! " It's just been one of those family life balancing acts where I have had to get more creative than usual! " Three  lots of baking  and Sugar Creations?!" Yes that's right! I made 3 lots of cakes and toppers for three  separate  days! 1) Minecraft Topper Cupcakes for school (previous posting) 2) Today's post -Spyro Skylander Portal Cake for a small school friends party 3) Lego Chima Laval 3 tiered C...
