Kardashian Kollection Inspired Cake

Image
Happy Birthday Gabriella the biggest Kardashian Kollection fan I know! Naked Black Chocolate Ganache, with Edible Leopard print courtesy of The Cupcake Orchard. Kardashian Kollection inspired logo and accents handmade with fondant and lustre dust by me. In a last minute rush it was decided that my niece would be in town to celebrate her 21st birthday and I wanted to make something special. I was inspired by Gabriella's favourite Kardashian Kollection leopard print purse. I am not that confident with my chocolate painting skills so i thought it would be a great excuse to try an edible image from my local cake supplies shop. Alexi was a fantastic help and had printed out a custom image for me in no time. I was really impressed with the quality, and found it much easier to work with than wafer paper and it sure did save me a lot of time! No hand painting all those leopard spots! It was so easy to peel and trim to size. I brushed a little piping gel...

Top Tip Friday: How to get the "Doily Look" on fondant toppers.

Image
Scalloped edges punched out to make a pretty doily effect. I know it's out of season now, but the pretty doily effect on the edges of these scalloped fondant toppers, would totally look fantastic for any occasion, any time of year! It's really pretty simple and all you need is a scalloped edge circle cutter (I am pretty sure they have lovely oval and heart shaped ones now too) Cut out your shapes then get  a small circle piping tip and cut /punch out little circles along the scallop line. I find a good dusting of corn flour underneath helps prevent sticking as you go around the circle. Team it with a bright coloured next size up, plain circle underneath to really highlight the pretty punched out edge or leave them plain - either way they will look great. A simple yet awesome technique that will give your next edible toppers that extra wow factor! And they say a picture tells a thousand words so check it out!!  Cut and punch ...

The Great Gatsby Cake

Image
Hi Everyone I hope your holidays have been treating you well? Thought I would just quickly share my Great Gatsby themed cake with you all! I have had such a super crazy week and I madly put this cake together at the last minute. My original design was going to be a fair bit different but due to circumstances out of my control I had to quickly redesign it. I was upset my originally planned flowers and feathers didn't make it - OMGOSH!!  Never and I mean NEVER rush large flowers - they will just not dry in time!  Ooops! And they don't like to be moved before hand! Have a look at what didn't make it - I think my edible  wafer paper feathers came out awesome! I am super keen to make another cake using edible feathers and flowers in the future - but definitely at a less hectic time of year! What was not meant to be! I feel a bit disappointed that it didn't all work out as originally planned but my friend said she was happy so hopefully she ...

How to Level and Torte a Cake Without Special Tools!

Image
A few weeks back on Top Tip Friday I talked about how cold or partially frozen cakes are so much easier to cut with an ordinary bread knife. I don't own an Agbay, (I cannot justify the price since I do not bake for profit) so I make do with every day tools in the home bakers kitchen!  Now I did promise to give you more! And today I am finally coming through! There's a little trick I learnt off Wilton on how to level your cake. You know, sometimes the unavoidable happens and  Eeeek!  You have this dome shaped cake!  Now check this out! The first part of the video is what I am talking about! It's genius! Just use your cake pan as a guide to level it! If you don't want to watch the video here's a photo of how I level off the top of my cakes. It Really Does Work! So that's a fantastic tip right?  But what about torting? I said I don't use any special tools right? And that is correct. Ok so what you do need is some kit...

Back to Basics Series : Part 4 Rose Leaf Cutter

Image
Welcome to Part 4 of my Back To Basics series! This edition is a little over due, but you know that's what happens when I make cakes for my daughter in-between blog posts! (More on her cake during the week)   Well I have to say it has been so much fun exploring the 6 different shapes included in the popular 18 piece cutter set currently available from Kmart Australia. (If you don't have the set don't worry you can still buy them individually elsewhere.) So let's continue to be inspired to make some gorgeous sugar decorations that you can store and use up to 6 months later! As you can see by the header photo I am so excited to say that I  have twisted this into a Christmas theme!! Please ensure that you have read   Part 1 Using Butterfly Cutters   as I will not be repeating the basic step of using a plunger today, and of course it would only be logical to recommend checking out  Part 2 Using Snowflake Cutters.   Each...
