Pirate Fondant Toppers Workshop

Image
Ahoy there me mateys! Have you guys missed me? Well I've certainly missed blogging! I have experienced a sudden family issue that still needs attending to and you know I always say family comes first. So to fill the gap I am just randomly posting a photo of my 6 pirate fondant toppers that I designed for my hobby workshop on Thursday.  Yes I know, many of you that follow me on facebook and g+ have already seen them but I know I have some regular readers who use the rss feeds - oh and of course there's always a lovely new visitor who's found me via a google search! (Hi! Welcome! I hope you found what you were looking for!) This week's workshop was a challenge to get through as I'd received some stressful news just as it begun, but my lovely attendees were super awesome and they still walked out with some awesome pirate toppers of their own! Arrgh! It was a great feeling to be able to share some new techniques and be in the company of some super lovely people.

Top Tip Friday #15 Shaping Fondant Pieces on sides of Cakes

Image
Trying to come up with a title for today's cake decorating tip proved harder than I had expected!  I don't know how else to explain what I mean. Drying fondant /gumpaste pieces in a rounded cake shape  that are going to go on the side of your cake seems like an awfully long title!  So hopefully the visual picture tells the one thousand words I am trying to convey across to you!  Okay, I think I am due for a second cup of coffee! I'm not thinking as quickly as usual and I almost forgot to put up today's tip! Well my excuse  being a public holiday for the local Cairns Show day I woke up thinking it was Saturday! I like to make detailed fondant accents to the sides of my cakes. Hmmm, the word accents sounds like just some shapes, so  perhaps I should call them "Siders" since they are technically not toppers!    The issue with being more detailed is that you cannot just cut them out quickly and stick them to the side of the cake - gravity will almost cert

Spotlight on The Custom Cakery!

Have you missed Cake Seller Spotlight day lately? I have been super busy with school holidays and you know I make no promises to sticking to timetables! Family first! My gorgeous lil 6 year old went back to school today, so I am going to start catching up on the posts you love the most!  This week, I am again showcasing one special Cake Seller. There are so many wonderful artists out there and I want to be able to help give them recognition and praise for being so talented and awe inspiring. And of course indulge in my cake crush addiction.  How are Cake Sellers Chosen? Any Cake Sellers who have participated in Cake Seller Monday on  Facebook   have the chance to be chosen. The honour of having a dedicated Day just for you will be determined by some loosely derived criteria. I fall in love with your cakes You're interactive and supportive to Cake Decor in Cairns main audience of Home Bakers (i.e. you're not a cake snob haha!) Introducing our Next Fabulous Cake

Top Tip Friday #14 Easy Lift Cake Boards

Image
Easy Lift Cake Boards? What's that all about you ask? Well you know when you decorate a cake. It's looking all pretty and you try to lift it up and oops you put dints in your finished board or worse bump your cake?  What about when you place it on a lipped cake stand and you want to lift it up without damaging said board or cake? "Yes!" Well I find the easiest solution is to get down to your local cheap shop (here in Cairns I use Overflow and The Reject Shop) and grab a $3 packet of self adhesive felt pads.  You know the ones that traditionally are for under furniture to stop your floors from getting scratched. You can get them in circles or mixed shapes - it really doesn't matter. It's quite simple really, but helps me every time!  Just peel and stick in an even space ensuring your board sits level. The felt pads will raise the height of your board slightly and give you just enough space to lift your board with ease.

How I made My Fondant Elmo Cake Topper

♬♩ Lala La La Lala La La  Elmo's World! ♫♪ Introducing my Green Chocolate Ganache cake, with fondant accents. And my super awesome, I am so proud of myself, hand modelled Elmo in Fondant!! .•°°•. ☆ .•°°•. Yay Me!! .•°°• ☆ .•°°•. Can you  half tell I am a little excited and just a bit proud of this one? I gotta say straight up, thanks to CakeCentral.com and CakesbyRaewyn for the tips on making the fur look.  I combined a couple of ideas and Ta da!  My 3D standing 100% fondant Elmo Topper was created! This was probably my biggest modelling challenge yet! Recreating a well known figure is a lot of pressure, you know you just have to get the proportions just a little too out of whack and bam your model just looks like a whole lotta wrong! I am not a sculptor and don't expect to get exact replicas, but this Elmo of mine - well yeah, I am not ashamed to say that I am pretty proud of how great he looks! And most importantly my super gorgeous niece knew exactly
